The Abacos
MARSH HARBOUR Marsh Harbour, on the island of Great Abaco, is the third largest town in The Bahamas. The 120 foot, candystriped Elbow Cay Lighthouse is probably the most photographed landmark in The Bahamas. The extensive shoreline of Great Abaco includes many areas of shallow banks, supporting protected patch reefs and fringing reefs. To the north and east is a lengthy barrier reef just beyond the many offshore islets. The diving area is best known for its easy shallow sites and an extensive array of undersea life owing, in part, to the protection of a marine park covering much of the area. There is also an unusual abundance of Pillar Coral at many poQuiar reef sites.

The dive sites include Tarpon Reef, with high profile corals providing a home for a school of Tarpon and a huge Green Moray; Coral Caverns, a series of winding caverns filled with clouds of shiny Silversides; the San Jacinto, the wreck of a large steamship that sank in 1865 in 40 feet of water; The Catacombs, a shallow sunsplattered cavern with abundant tropical fish and frequent turtles; and Coral Condos, a large formation of coral heads with cascading plate coral and excellent marine life in 60' water.
